Client Profile and Challenge

The Foundation for Free Expression is a non-profit organization founded by James Hirsen, lawyer and law professor in Southern California.  The Foundation was in its formative stage and seeking to increase freedom of expression in the media.

Solution

The first step to creating a presence in Second Life for the Foundation was to design the physical space.  This took shape as a two-story office building, which includes a lobby, private office, board room, lecture hall, classroom and a mock courtroom.  Each room is equipped with all the necessary tools to make presentations, conduct lectures, classes and moot court.

Results

The Foundation continues to make strides in Second Life by reaching out to legal organizations, social networks and conducting research through users.  An unexpected, but beneficial side effect of The Foundation’s presence in Second Life is the formation of the Virtual Law Association in-world.  Growing in numbers, this organization is involved in research regarding freedom of expression and legal issues that arise from virtual reality.
